Best Windows Alternatives to the new Macbook Pro

Despite the fact that most people have not used one of Apple's new MacBook Pros, there are some creative professionals -- including graphic designers, photographers and video editors -- who are already disappointed by them. For them, it's all about the specs.
Apple's new machines don't feature the latest Intel and Nvidia processors, don't offer more than 16GB of memory, and ditch nearly all the traditional ports -- including full-size USB ports and the SD card reader -- in favor of the new Thunderbolt 3 standard.
Some pros are even considering a switch to Windows instead. But which PCs are worthy replacements for the MacBook Pro? Here are five Windows laptops alternatives that creative professionals should consider.
dell-xps
The Dell XPS

The all-around creative

The Dell XPS 15 laptop matches up nicely in both price and specs against the new 15-inch MacBook Pro. Its practical design houses a 15-inch 4K display that renders 100 percent of the Adobe RGB color space -- a plus for editing photos or color-correcting videos. Its $1,850 US price tag is another win. Check out our full review of the Dell XPS 15 here.
Advantages over the 15-inch MacBook Pro: 4K display, touchscreen, 32GB of RAM and ports including HDMI, Thunderbolt 3, USB 3.0 and an SD card reader.
Disadvantages: The Nvidia graphics card is not VR-ready. The battery life is just OK. And the 15-inch MacBook Pro's design looks better than the clunky wedge shape of the Dell.
SAMSUNG CSC
The Razer Blade Pro

Photo/video workstation

If you are looking for pure power in a laptop, meet the new 17-inch Razer Blade Pro. This computer has pretty much every spec you could ask for: a giant 4K touchscreen with a wide color gamut, loads of ports, the best graphics chip you can get in a laptop, 32GB of RAM and even a scroll wheel! Read our in-depth look at the Razer Blade Pro.
Advantages over the 15-inch MacBook Pro: 4K touchscreen, NVIDIA GTX 1080 (8GB) graphics, an SD card slot, 32GB RAM, and a 2TB PCIe SSD (in RAID 0, which means up to twice the read and write speed by combining two drives together).
Disadvantages: Weight (it's nearly twice the weight of a 15-inch MacBook Pro), price ($3,699 US where the 15-inch MacBook Pro starts at $2,399 US) and it's unable to run Final Cut Pro (which is true of any Windows laptop).

Microsoft Surface Book

Designers and artists

Recently, Microsoft announced that it was going to offer a premium version of its Surface Book with an i7 processor. In our review of the Surface Book, we gave "Archie" comic book artist Dan Parent some time with the laptop/tablet hybrid. He viewed the Surface Book as a serious contender to replace his Wacom tablet and stylus.
Advantages over the 13-inch MacBook Pro: A top-of-the-line Surface Book comes with better (game-capable) graphics, more ports (including an SD card reader) as well as both a touchscreen and the Microsoft Surface pen stylus.
Disadvantages: A top-of-the-line 13-inch MacBook Pro is cheaper, lighter, smaller and comes with a faster processor and Thunderbolt 3 ports. It can also charge with a standard USB-C power adapter, where the Surface Book still requires a proprietary cable.
surface-book-pro

VR and game developers

The new Alienware 13 is basically a 15-inch laptop crammed into a 13-inch body. The quad-core processor, heavy-duty Nvidia graphics chip and particularly the optional OLED display make this an ideal machine for developers previewing HDR game content. You can even buy the optional Alienware Graphics Amp ($199) to boost its performance even further. For more on the new Alienware 13 check out our review.
Advantages over the 13-inch MacBook Pro: A plethora of ports (Thunderbolt 3, USB-3, HDMI, Mini Display Port), a quad-core processor, 32GB of RAM, 2TB PCIe SSD and Nvidia 1060 graphics.
Disadvantages: A fully loaded new Alienware 13 ($3,425) costs much more than a top-of-the-line 13-inch MacBook Pro ($2,899). It's also nearly 2 pounds heavier and lacks an SD card slot.
thinkpad460-hero

Value and battery life

The 14-inch ThinkPad T460 offers a lot for a relatively low price -- a top-specced machine only costs $2,034 US and comes complete with 32GB of RAM, a touchscreen, and a fingerprint reader. One of the nicest features is the tremendous battery life -- Lenovo claims 18 hours on a charge.
Advantages over the 13-inch MacBook Pro: A comfy keyboard, 32GB of RAM, touchscreen, price, dual batteries (the rear one is swappable) for tremendous battery life, an SD card reader and an HDMI port.
Disadvantages: Smaller-capacity slower SSDs, average screen resolution, and no Thunderbolt 3 or USB-C ports.

Final word

It is a great time to buy a computer, even if you're a creative professional. If you were pining for a new MacBook Pro but disappointed by the specs, I'd recommend waiting a bit to read our review on the higher end models with Touch Bar. Specs are just one part of the story. Here's our review of the new baseline 13-inch MacBook Pro without Touch Bar.
If your creative workflow allows for a Windows based-machine, these five deserve your consideration. Though, one of the complaints some creative pros had against Apple, was its choice of a sixth-generation Intel processor instead of a seventh-generation version. All five Windows machines in this article also have a sixth-generation Intel processor. So there are some specs, that will take time to make it into our creative machines.
If you can't make that jump to a Windows machine, you should also consider last year's MacBook Pro. While the specs are 2015 (which in computer years is old), a top-of-the-line model costs $2,899 US and comes with a 2.8GHz 4-core Intel i7 processor, 16GB of memory, a 1TB SSD and all the ports you're used to (USB-3, SD card reader and Thunderbolt 2).
Take a look below to compare the specs of the new MacBook Pro against these Windows alternatives -- all specs are for the top-of-the-line model of each computer.

Why Deadpool Is Still The Best Superhero Movie Of 2016

There has certainly been no shortage of superhero movies this year, as the Marvel, DC, and X-Men universes all delivered a ton of different and exciting silver screen outings. We saw comic book icons duke it out over ideological differences, we saw magic appear for the first time in both the DCEU and the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and we finally even figured out what specifically caused Charles Xavier's hair to fall out during the events of X-Men: Apocalypse. If you're a fan of comic book heroes and villains, then 2016 has probably been a great year for you so far.
deadpool
However, there's one movie that stands out against the competition: Deadpool. Somehow, against all odds, Wade Wilson's low-budget, R-rated solo adventure has risen above the rest, and stolen our hearts in the process. Now that all of the major comic book movies of 2016 have premiered, we've compiled a list of reasons why Deadpool is undeniably the best of the lot. Check out our arguments and let us know what you think in the comments section below.

The Story Was Simple, Yet Effective

While the other superhero films of 2016 dealt with apocalyptic threats and bad guys with grand, dastardly schemes, Deadpool kept things simple and restrained, and it was all the better for it. At its core, the film was nothing more than a romantic comedy/revenge tale with buckets of blood thrown in for good measure, and wasn't trying to be anything more. That simplicity allowed the film's story to breathe more, and it offered Tim Miller and Ryan Reynolds the opportunity to play to its offbeat, quirky strengths whenever possible. The stakes weren't even that high in Deadpool; Wade Wilson literally just wanted get his good looks back so Vanessa will love him; that's a perfect example of heart over spectacle.

Purchase Dead from iTunes Store and Watch it anywhere

itunes-deadpool

Wade Wilson (Ryan Reynolds) is a former Special Forces operative who now works as a mercenary. His world comes crashing down when evil scientist Ajax (Ed Skrein) tortures, disfigures and transforms him into Deadpool. The rogue experiment leaves Deadpool with accelerated healing powers and a twisted sense of humor. With help from mutant allies Colossus and Negasonic Teenage Warhead (Brianna Hildebrand), Deadpool uses his new skills to hunt down the man who nearly destroyed his life.
Now you can purchase the Deadpool movie from iTunes Store. And you can watch the bought movies on iPhone, iPad, iPod and Apple TV. And if you want to watch it on non-apple devices, you can use the iTunes video converter - M4V Converter Plus for Windows.

How to Watch movies and TV shows from iCloud freely

New version of M4V Converter Plus for Mac has released on Nov 3th, 2016. The new version supports reading iCloud Movie on the Add-Movie window. And all the iCloud movies are marked with icloud icon.

Apple iCloud Service

iCloud securely stores your photos, videos, documents, music, apps, and more - and keeps them updated across all your devices. So you always have access to what you want, wherever you want it.
Apple mobile devices (iPad, iPhone and iPod Touch) running iOS 5 or newer will connect to the iCloud storage associated with your Apple ID. Then, iOS and other apps capable of saving data to iCloud will automatically synchronize that data while you're connected to the Internet.
Apple computers running Mac OS X Lion (10.7) or newer can run apps programmed to synchronize with iCloud storage.
All Apple computers can view, upload and download iCloud storage contents using the Web app at icloud.com. The look and feel of the icloud.com Web site resembles the default Apple iOS interface.
icloud-icon
You can authorize up to 10 devices to access and use iCloud with your Apple ID. This is a leap beyond the iTunes Store authorization, which is limited to five devices. You get 5GB of free storage in iCloud and you have the option to choose a plan for up to 2TB. More iCloud storage means more space to store your photos, videos, documents, and apps, so they're always available from any device. iCloud Photo Library and iCloud Drive can also help free up space on your devices.

How to watch movies and TV shows from iCloud on non-apple devices

iCloud will only show you movies that your bought through the iTunes store, using the same iTunes account that you're logged into on your device. When you buy a movie from iTunes it is automatically stored in iCloud so you can access it from any device, including your iPhone, iPad, Mac, and Apple TV. Apple offers 5 GB of free iCloud space to everyone (free 5 GB is per Apple ID, not per device), but you'll run up against that storage limit sooner than you'd think. You can free up iCloud storage space by backuping movies and TV shows.
M4V Converter Plus for Mac released its new version 4.2.4, which can support reading iCloud Movie on the Add-Movie window. You can convert the iCloud videos to other common video formats, so that you can play iCloud videos on Apple devices and more other devices. Top 10 Thanksgiving Movies 2016 - Movies to watch on Thanksgiving Day

What better way to commemorate the great American holiday than with a lineup of Thanksgiving movies? Sure, they're not all centered around the proverbial dining table, but these movies do have one thing in common: reminders that we can be thankful for lots of things -- at Thanksgiving or any time of year. From heartwarming classics to laugh-out-loud comedies to historical dramas, we have your viewing needs covered, with not a turkey in the bunch! Let's start out with a counter-cultural film that centers on a Thanksgiving dinner gone awry.

10. Alice's Restaurant

A Thanksgiving classic, "Alice's Restaurant" hit the big screen in 1969. This larger-than-life recreation of Arlo Guthrie's song of the same name is an entertaining romp through 1960s pop culture, complete with a firsthand account of anti-war sentiments. After Guthrie visits his friend Alice for Thanksgiving, he offers to transport her trash to the dump, where he encounters a closed landfill. A series of decisions prompts him to push the garbage into a gully. When Guthrie's caught by local authorities, a memorable court appearance is followed by a series of legal events in which the Army finds him unfit for military service.

9. Dutch

Ed O'Neill (of ABC's "Modern Family" and "Married with Children") stars in this 1991 comedy about a meat-and-potatoes construction worker's attempt to stay firmly ensconced in his girlfriend's good graces -- by retrieving her preppy son from boarding school in time for Thanksgiving. Although we fully admit the movie was indeed panned by critics at the time of its release, that hasn't stopped us from keeping it in our "10 Best." We think it has a number of redeeming qualities -- namely, a cross-country road trip filled with comedic situations. And, it's clean enough to watch with the grandparents or the junior set. How can you go wrong with that kind of set-up?

8. Pieces of April

Long before she wed Tom Cruise, Katie Holmes played the lead in "Pieces of April," a 2003 comedic drama. At the center of it all is Thanksgiving dinner, which April attempts to whip up in her cramped and less-than-clean New York City apartment for a cast of snarky, largely estranged family members. We admit that while her apartment makes us want to grab the nearest disinfectant spray, it offers an interesting backdrop for the action that ensues. Although the movie has an amateur pallor, it makes up for it with quirkiness and an emotionally satisfying conclusion -- and makes the list of our Thanksgiving movie picks.

7. The New World

Pastoral landscapes, swelling instrumentals and gripping narratives make "The New World" a compelling recount of the Thanksgiving settlers we've heard about since early childhood. At the heart of this movie is a story of love found and lost, but don't let that sway your opinion. There's plenty of action, too. Still, the dynamic between John Smith (Colin Farrell) and native princess Pocahontas -- each sent reeling by a clash between cultures -- offers a number of scene-stealing moments. In many ways, this movie is a coming of age story, not only for these pivotal characters, but for an emerging nation. Intense, and sometimes unflinchingly poignant, this depiction is worth a watch.

6. Pocahontas

"Pocahontas," a 1995 Disney animated film, offers a fictionalized look at Native American Pocahontas and Englishman John Smith as English settlers meet Powhatan Indians in Jamestown. It also makes a nice follow-up to the realities of "The New World," and we especially like suspending disbelief when Pocahontas visits Grandmother Willow, an advice-offering tree spirit. The movie's sure to bring back memories for the teenagers who viewed it as toddlers, and it's perfect for helping a new generation of children wile away a pleasant hour.

5. Home for the Holidays

A starlit cast, including Robert Downey Jr., Dylan McDermott and Anne Bancroft, lends acting prowess to a movie that explores the stressors of gathering with one's family during the holidays. We particularly like this biting comedy for its gently redeeming conclusion. It's a satisfying close to a storyline that finds Claudia Larson (Holly Hunter) losing a job, smooching the guy who used to be her boss and coping with a daughter who insists on spending Thanksgiving with her boyfriend. As this extended family gathers around a turkey dinner, the antics step up a notch, which is why this movie made our list. It's entertaining, and has just the right feel for our Thanksgiving movie marathon.

4. Son-in-Law

Crawl (Pauly Shore) is a big city boy who travels to the Midwest for Thanksgiving, pretending to be the fiancé of a farmer's daughter he befriended at an L.A. college. His guise as Rebecca's fiancé is designed to discourage an overly ambitious suitor in her hometown, but the strait-laced innocent (Carla Gugino) eventually falls for Crawl as he bungles his way through a series of down-home traditions. Even her suspicious family comes around in the end, as Crawl's unflagging enthusiasm wins them over. For a fun watch that doesn't require a lot of cerebral musings, this is a great pick for Thanksgiving viewing -- for the whole family.

3. The Blind Side

Sandra Bullock's Oscar-winning performance in "The Blind Side" made it one of 2009's most viewed box office movies. Bullock, who plays wealthy no-nonsense Southern mom Leigh Anne Tuohy, takes in Michael Oher -- a homeless football prodigy (Quinton Aaron) who eventually becomes a first-round NFL draft pick. The movie makes our top 10 not only because it's a compelling account of actual events, but also because we can watch it time and again -- particularly for the way it weaves together a family. Our favorite scene? When the privileged family tucks into a take-out Thanksgiving dinner in front of a blaring TV, then follows Oher to the dining room table for a conversation-filled meal that plays a pivotal role in the movie's outcome.
the-blind-side

2. Planes, Trains and Automobiles

This 1987 film follows Neal Page (Steve Martin) and Del Griffith (John Candy) on a journey of Odysseus-like proportions. The impromptu duo's nearly failed attempt to return from a business trip in time for Thanksgiving dinner leads to a likeable stint of self-discovery. Soon, each man realizes he isn't quite the easy-going-peach-of-a-guy he assumed he was, and we figure out that what started as a comedy offers a few redemptive lessons, too, like caring for a nearly total stranger. It's enough to make us feel a little smarmy and wistful -- which is just the right mood for a family Thanksgiving.

1.A Charlie Brown Thanksgiving

When Peppermint Patty ("C'mon, you can do it, Chuck!") and her friends finagle Charlie Brown into serving a traditional Thanksgiving dinner, it's up to Woodstock and Snoopy to make the day a success. Thanks to daring dishes like buttered toast and popcorn, and a memorable struggle with an uncooperative folding chair, Snoopy lends his own brand of wordless charm to the day's events. As the gang gathers around a ping-pong table for their unique meal, the true meaning of Thanksgiving shines through. A classic for parents and grandparents alike -- and sure to become a fast favorite of younger generations -- this 1973 animated Emmy-winner tops our list for sentimental fun.

'Hacksaw Ridge' Review: Mel Gibson Returns With a War Movie About Peace

Hacksaw Ridge is a 2016 World War II biographical film directed by Mel Gibson, written by Andrew Knight and Robert Schenkkan and stars Andrew Garfield, Vince Vaughn, Sam Worthington, Luke Bracey, Hugo Weaving, Ryan Corr, Teresa Palmer, Richard Pyros and Rachel Griffiths. Principal photography began on September 29, 2015 in various locations around New South Wales including Sydney Olympic Park and lasted for 105 days ending in December 2015.
It had its world premiere on September 4, 2016 at the 73rd Venice Film Festival, where it received a 10-minute standing ovation. The film is scheduled to be released in Australia on November 3, 2016 by Icon Film Distribution, and in the United States on November 4, 2016, by Summit Entertainment.
mel-gibson-hacksaw-ridge
Mel Gibson is back, directing the bloody hell out of a war movie about ... peace. You may have issues with the star's past history of anger and intolerance. But you'll have no issue with Hacksaw Ridge, a movie about a different kind of brave heart. It's the fact-based, World War II story of Private First Class Desmond T. Doss, the first conscientious objector to receive the Congressional Medal of Honor. Andrew Garfield, in the best performance of his career to date, plays Desmond, a feisty kid out of Virginia's Blue Ridge mountains who swears never to pick up a gun (he almost killed his daddy with one) and swears just as vehemently to go into combat as a medic. How does this cornstalk-skinny pacifist, a devoted Seventh-Day Adventist, enter the front lines where you shoot to kill just to stay alive?
That's the heart of the film that Gibson directs with no-bull sincerity from a script by Robert Schenkkan (The Pacific) and Andrew Knight that digs past clichés to touch a raw nerve. Desmond's father, Tom (a superb Hugo Weaving), is so traumatized by his service in World War I that he forbids his sons to enlist. The boys, who've have no problem defying Dad when he drunkenly abuses their mother, Bertha (Rachel Griffiths), defy him again. Desmond's brother Hal (Nathaniel Buzolic) enlists soon after the Japanese bomb Pearl Harbor. And our hero, though crazy in love with Dorothy (the excellent Teresa Palmer), a nurse at the hospital where he gets medical schooling, is determined to follow.
Basic training takes on new layers of meaning as Desmond shirks no duty, except for rifle practice. That decision angers both Sgt. Howell (Vince Vaughn, doing gruff) and the fellow recruits, who mistake his principles for cowardice. Attempts are made to drive this renegade out of the Army, even using the threat of court-martial. Desmond's dad turns up in an unexpected defense of his son. It's a tribute to Garfield's total commitment to the role that he never lets easy sentiment color the force of the character's convictions.
Not surprisingly, it's the scenes of battle that send Hacksaw Ridge roaring to life, with Gibson and cinematographer Simon Duggan refusing to flinch from the harsh realities of ground warfare. The rocky slope from which the film takes its title is the Japanese stronghold that Desmond's battalion must destroy before they can take Okinawa. Gibson captures the most brutal and bloody screen carnage since his own Braveheart and the opening sequence of Steven Spielberg's Saving Private Ryan. And it's here that Desmond, staying behind as his troops are forced to pull out, repeatedly returns amid bullets, bombs and grenade blasts, to round up wounded soldiers, 75 in all, and lower them by rope down the ridge and to safety.
hacksaw-ridge
Thanks to some of the greatest battle scenes ever filmed, Gibson once again shows his staggering gifts as a filmmaker, able to juxtapose savagery with aching tenderness. There's always been more than an adrenaline rush in his work: Look at Braveheart (for which he won the Oscar as best director), The Passion of the Christ (the most successful R-rated indie film of all-time) and the masterful, misunderstood Apocalypto, released a decade ago – i.e., roughly about the time LA cops got him on a DUI and his rants put him in the public doghouse. Hacksaw Ridge is being touted as Gibson's comeback. Is it also an atonement? Who can say? What's clear is that Gibson has made a film about family, faith, love and forgiveness all put the test in an arena of violent conflict – a movie you don't want to miss.

iPhone 8 might come with wireless charging

You might never have to plug a charging cable into your iPhone again.
Foxconn, the Chinese manufacturing company that builds electronics including the iPhone, is reportedly testing wireless charging modules that might make it into next year's iPhone 8, according to a report from the Nikkei Asian Review.
Whether the iPhone 8 actually gets wireless charging will depend on the yield rates of the modules, a source told the Nikkei. Poor yield rates could push Apple to scrap the feature.
iphone-7-wireless-charging
Prior to the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus launch, the company was widely expected to use new displays made out of more scratch-resistant sapphire glass. But poor yield rates from sapphire glass producer GT Advanced Technologies forced Apple to ditch it for "ion-strengthened" glass.
And prior to the iPhone 7 launch, there were various leaks showing an iPhone 7 Plus model with a smart connector (much like the one on the iPad Pros) on the backside. Of course, that model never materialized.
Low yield rates could also corner Apple into including the feature only on a high-end model, much like the dual cameras on the iPhone 7 Plus.
iphone7-water-resistant
It's also not the first time we've heard of the iPhone 8 getting wireless charging. Back in January, a Bloomberg report claimed Apple was working on true wireless charging technology that works over a distance. Meaning an iPhone wouldn't need to be placed on a charging pad, which is then plugged into an outlet.
It's not a completely farfetched idea. Apple already has a few patents for such wireless charging tech, although implementation is challenging. And the Apple Watch already has wireless charging, although it works via MagSafe and not over a distance.
Adding wireless charging would also appease users who lament the removal of the headphone jack as they'd be able to wirelessly charge and plug in Lightning headphones at the same time.
Furthermore, wireless charging would resolve the whole "iPhone 7's included Lightning cable doesn't work with the new MacBook Pros" issue that's been irritating some customers.
Next year's iPhone marks the 10th anniversary of the iPhone, and Apple is reportedly planning a major overhaul. The iPhone 8 is expected to have a refreshed design that might lose the bezels, integrate the Touch ID sensor underneath the screen, and sport an OLED display.
It's still way too soon to be talking iPhone 8 rumors, so I'll just leave you with some things that are guaranteed to be true, as outlined by Christina Warren:
  • It will be Apple's fastest iPhone ever.
  • It will have Apple's most advanced optics.
  • There will be at least one extra feature you can't get on any other iPhone.
  • It will come in rose gold.
